High School Experiences

High School is a vital part of your life where you begin to figure out in which direction you want to lead the rest of your education. There are a variety of different paths to choose from. You could go to college or begin working. For me, I was very focused and I had a path that I knew I wanted to follow which continued onto college and graduate school. The high school that I went to provided me with all of the tools and opportunities for me to be the most successful student and allowed me to follow through with my educational dreams.

Starting my sophomore year I began to take Advanced Placement courses. They were all high intensity with the goal of providing high school students with the college workload. I feel as if I was lucky to be given the opportunity to take so many AP courses because it absolutely helped me adjust to college classes. To a certain degree I knew what to expect and therefore wasn't unbelievably overwhelmed when I started my freshman year of college.

My senior year I was a part of a dual enrollment program, which I am thankful that my high school provided. Because I was a successful student, I was given the chance to take courses at the local university in my town, UMass Dartmouth. I was able to leave the high school every third block to go take my Philosophy class at UMass Dartmouth. It was absolutely intimidating not knowing anyone and being in a lecture sized classroom for the first time, but like anything else I got used to it and learned how to adjust to this new situation. I remember sitting down for my first exam. I was so extremely nervous, more nervous than I ever was for any high school test. My professor was passing out the exams as I was having a small panic attack. When I finally got my copy and started to read through the questions, I knew all of the answers. I flew through the test, not a single question could stump me. I was so proud of myself to march up to the front of that large classroom and be the first student to pass in an exam and I was able to pass it in with confidence. At the end of the semester I passed the class with flying colors. It verified to me that I was absolutely ready to take that next step and begin college here at URI.

My guidance counselor who I had all four years of high school, Ms. Squeglia, was another tool my high school provided for me and was a huge influence on me. Similarly to my third and fourth grade teacher Mrs. Hunt, Ms. S was always my motivator and encourager when it came to challenging myself. I was never always willing to take all of those AP classes or take courses at UMass but Ms. S was my biggest cheerleader and somehow every semester I had the most advanced schedule. I am eternally grateful for her extra push because I am at a place in my schooling where I always want to get the most out of my education by challenging myself.

Where I am now at URI, it is my second year here but academically I am a junior all because of the opportunities and tools my high school provided to me. Because I was pushed so much in high school I am actually able to graduate a year early. It is so wonderful because URI accepted all of my AP test scores as well as my classes at UMass directly transferred. I am so happy because the majority of my general education classes were completed in high school. Graduating a year early has so much benefit, saving a whole year worth of tuition being at the top of the list. My ultimate dream is to become a Speech Language Pathologist. In order to get that occupation, I have to complete undergraduate and graduate school. With being able to graduate a year early from undergraduate school it makes my dream that much more of a reality. I am able to go to graduate school sooner and therefore reach my goal of becoming a Speech Language Pathologist.

By enrolling in a public school where the teachers, guidance counselors, and peers all encourage you to be the best student you can be definitely has its perks. Because I was placed in a high school where I had all of these wonderful resources I was able to be even more successful in college. I am also able to graduate a year early, which is helpful in achieving my academic dreams. My GPA is flourishing because I learned techniques in my college level high school classes that help me to do well in my courses here in college. I couldn't be more thankful for Ms. S and all of her help when it came to motivating me to be a strong student. If it was not for my high school and my guidance counselor I don't think I would be the determined and goal oriented student that I am today.
